Remarks: We had one of the best sailing days ever crossing the passage between Martinique and Dominica. Light winds in the lee of Mount Peleé gave way to a perfect sailing breeze filling in around the northern tip of the island. After the initial strong gusts passed we set all sail except the gaff tops’l and were clipping along with a bone in her teeth. Martinique faded into the clouds astern and Dominica started materializing out of the haze ahead. As we approached the island we were going 6, 7, and then 8 knots with the bright sun beating down on the white sails, quivering with energy as we sailed her as close to the wind as she will go. We slid into the lee of Dominica past Scotts Head, Soufriere lush and green and took in all sail. It is a very quiet anchorage that we dropped the hook in, the only sounds the peepers from the forest and the wind in the palm trees.
