Cooking. A crew must eat. The crew had been sharing this job until Picton Castle’s chief of cuisine Mr. Church arrived. While they all did an honorable and creative job of it, they were also quite pleased to surrender the honor to the ship’s long time master chef. Donald has been keeping all hands here in Lunenburg well fed from his shore-galley. Never a complaint, always hearty food- plenty of it and on time, a saint of a man. And one cannot ask for a better ships officer or shipmate.
Boats getting painted up. A Cross Island skiff on the left, these get built at the Dory shop, and a 10’ ‘two-bow’ boat from Bequia, Saint Vincent, in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean, called NO MONKEY. A descendent of whale boats that came to Bequia, this nifty craft is my son Dawson’s and he lets us use it for Bosun School and PICTON CASTLE. Tippy at first, then when used to the boat it is excellent to row. Fast, maneuverable and leaves no wake. This sweet boat once made its living fishing.
In the making of new wire t’gallant lifts we must make 4 eye splices in wire but in smaller wire than this. Making lifts for yards is a precise piece of work. The two lifts must be the exact same length. Here is Violet, Bosun School alumna and PC crew practicing in much heavier wire cable. A rigger in the making.
The innards of our lovely 1930’s N0. 6 HYDE capstan. A new base made by Jacob Frank of West Dublin across the La Have River. Rock solid once again. It was not broken but now its perfect again. Just now getting coats of epoxy to make it last a long time.
Zoe, from Bermuda (snowy winter is a new experience!) getting some paint on a secondary capstan in our workshop on the waterfront.
Bowling at Lunenburg’s lanes. Dawson is a fan of bowling too. Frankly, no one seems to be any good at bowling but it’s a fun night out here in Da Burg.
We had a quite a few birthdays in February. We missed some too….
We had a crew reunion at the KNOT PUB one Friday evening. Good time had by all.
And then broke into music….
Violet, Spring and Gary, our medical officer on a voyage past, making good sounds
Lest we forget…………
Outward Bound! Yeah, this more like what we have in mind…….
Stay tuned, more to come, watch this space…. Update from the ship in Shelburne coming soon.
