This was my first Picton Castle homecoming and I cannot put into words how special it was to be involved. My role that day was gate security outside of the Adams & Knickle wharf keeping folks out of the way until it was safe. Danielle, who was on social media duty, took turns with me at the gate so I could watch the ship come in. Seeing her come over the horizon from Battery Point stirred emotions in us all here on the shore. What a magnificent sight!
The ship’s wharf at 174 Bluenose Drive needs repairing so the folks at A & K provided us with a much-needed space for the ship, and for the crew to disembark and work from. As it is a secure working wharf, we needed to keep family and friends at the gate until it was safe for them to enter. With Danielle’s (and later Maggie’s) help, we greeted folks from the world over – I was able to meet all the families and friends and former crew and see them greet their favorite people! Speaking to folks about the Picton Castle and her travels and history was a wonderful way to spend a hot Saturday in Lunenburg.
Afterward, Maggie, Danielle, and I managed to dress ourselves up and get to the Great Hall in the Fisheries Museum where we hosted a short reception/graduation for the crew. It was here that Captain Moreland handed out sea service certificates to the crew and we heard stories about the adventure of a lifetime. It was then up to Shipwright for some beverages and snacks. Shipwright had a special beer on tap for us – Picton Castle’s Last Leg Lager. It was delicious!
