Hurricane Fiona has done some serious damage in the West Indies and is now heading our way. It has increased in intensity on its way here. We are looking at stiff gale force Northerlies blowing off the land starting tonight and plenty of rain. We are well protected from Northerlies in Lunenburg Harbour. No real seas develop. SE and South winds is what gets us nervous around here. Big seas and damaging swell can develop as the harbour is open to the SE. We have had sustained SE winds give us seas breaking over the end of our wharf. Much stronger Northerlies east of Halifax with the storm’s eye landing at the Strait of Canso. East of that is looking at nasty onshore hurricane force winds all along Cape Breton with very large seas. With a well soaked ground we can expect land damage over the entire area with likely many trees down and power outages but probably not much harbor damage in the Lunenburg and the southwestern shore area. The Picton Castle is well lashed to the best dock in town with all manner of extra heavy hawsers and chafe gear. We will be standing watch through the night tomorrow, and will be knocking off at noon to rest up. All is as well as it could be.
