Bosun School Starts June 27th, 2022

This just in – Bosun School will begin on Monday June 27th, 2022!

What could be better than spending time in and around boats in the summer sun on the coast of Nova Scotia?  Not much that we can think of, so that’s what we’ll be doing this summer in the seafaring port of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada as we offer a session of the Bosun School.

Bosun School is a land-based marine skills enhancement program designed for people who want to learn and improve their technical marine skills while also developing leadership and teamwork abilities, and having fun on and around the water.

Who can attend?  Well, anyone who has some sailing or boating experience.  You might have been a trainee or a crew member on a tall ship, you might have sailed with family or friends, or at a yacht club, you might have worked at a boatyard, you might be a professional mariner.  Bosun School is a fully hands-on participatory program, so you need to be prepared to work hard.  You also need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  You could be from Canada or from any other country.

During this summer’s session of Bosun School, we’ll spend a lot of time in small boats, sailing, rowing and motoring around Lunenburg harbour.  Handling small boats is an essential skill for any mariner.  We’ll tie knots, splice rope, make seizings and whippings in rope.  We’ll learn to splice wire.  We’ll learn to make marine carpentry ship and boat repairs.  We’ll learn about how to caulk boats and ships (not the same!).  We’ll scrape and sand.  We’ll learn about paint, varnish, oil, tar and other coatings and goops, there is far more to this than meets the eye, and how to manage a paint locker.  We’ll worm, parcel and serve new rigging.  We’ll handle heavy things aloft and learn how to do it safely and securely.

Applications are now open for this upcoming session, which will run from June 27th to August 26th.  If you’d like to apply, please email us your resume/CV and a cover letter that tells us more about you, your experience with boats/ships, and why you’d like to be a student at Bosun School to [email protected].
