Flexibility and patience are lessons that ships and the sea teach, we learn to work with the environmental conditions we’re given. Now we’re applying that lesson to organizing the Bosun School – we’re announcing that the start of Bosun School has been delayed by two weeks, starting June 21 instead of June 7.
Nova Scotia has initiated a short term lockdown (currently scheduled for two weeks) due an increase in COVID-19 cases in our province in Canada. While the case numbers aren’t high compared to other places, we are keen to put the brakes on this in any way possible. So we have all stepped up measures and non-essential travel has been restricted for the time being. Restrictions were put in place swiftly and the people of Nova Scotia are working together to follow public health measures and get the case numbers down again. We are optimistic that we’ll be able to proceed with a fantastic summer Bosun School starting June 21 and running until August 27 at our facility here in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
Bosun School is a skills enhancement program for sailors and people who already know they like boats, ships and the sea. Most of our students are in the 18-35 age range and have some prior sailing experience, whether that’s crewing on weekly races at their local yacht club, ocean crossings on a tall ship, or working in the commercial maritime industry. The skills Bosun School teaches all relate to good seamanship, ship and boat maintenance, and making the best use of the resources you have available.
You’ll spend a lot of time in small boats, handling them under sail, power and oar. Lunenburg harbour in the summer is such a great place for that! You’ll also learn knots and splices in rope and wire, how to lift heavy items using mechanical advantage, rigging tackles, serving and seizing, caulking, how to use different coatings and mixtures and which one to choose for which job, launching and retrieving small boats, and so much more.
We are still accepting applications for this summer’s session of the Bosun School. Significant scholarship support is available. To apply, please send your resume/CV that includes your sailing/boating experience, along with a cover letter that tells us more about you and why you’d like to become a student at Bosun School by email to [email protected].
